SONS and mothers World Premiere

20 October 2013

Regal Cinema

275 Kensington Rd Kensington Park, SA,

12:00PM

One of the highlights of the 2012 Adelaide Fringe was the work of No Strings Attached, a company that creates theatre by disabled artists and performers. This is the story behind that triumph, an intimate portrait of a group of marginalised men who have chosen to expose their innermost feelings for all to see.

Led by Alirio Zavarce, a Venezuelan-born actor and director, the Men’s Ensemble creates a theatrical love letter to one of the most important women in their lives – their mother.

This documentary follows the painstaking development of the show for over a year. Leave your views of disability at the door and instead, through the eyes of the Men’s Ensemble, experience what it is like to be simply human.

To celebrate the World Premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival there will be full disability access at The Regal Theatre with AUSLAN interpreters, live audio description and wheelchair access.

The Adelaide Film Festival premiere on Sunday 20 October will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by Kelly Vincent MLC. Sitting alongside her will be UK performer Julie McNamara, members  of the Men’s Ensemble and local artist Gaelle Mellis as they discuss the representation of disabled artists in the arts.

Link Disability Magazine now free online – for all!

The online version of the non-profit Link Disability Magazine will now be FREE for all for the entire year, thanks to a partnership with Telstra.

All readers need to do is register online – for FREE – to get complimentary access to all of the magazine’s latest issues and articles in 2013.

The move marks a new era for Link, which started out in 1980 as a small, state-based newspaper by SA disability advocate Jeff Heath before evolving into a national, glossy, full-colour magazine.

For the past seven years, Link has been published by Inprint Design – an Adelaide-based graphic design company, which provides supported employment for people with a range of disabilities.

Link editor Carla Caruso says: “The vision is to have as many people in the Australian disability community as possible know, read and enjoy Link – be it a person with a disability identifying with another’s story or discovering a product to make their life easier, a disability worker wanting to keep abreast of industry news, a person with a newly diagnosed child seeking advice and reassurance, or beyond.”

Telstra has been a tremendous supporter and invaluable to Link and has generously provided extra sponsorship this year to make it happen. The new-look website now boasts:

• Free access to the current magazine online for all readers, as well as back issue content
• World-class disability access
• Tablet computer compatibility
• Extra content, such as latest news, events and more, and
• Avenues for more online advertising.

Well-known Link supporters include Marayke Jonkers, an Australian Paralympic swimmer, para-triathlete and founder of the Sporting Dreams fund. Marayke said: “Link is an invaluable publication for the disability community throughout Australia, bringing people together and sharing REAL ideas and stories about REAL people.”

Dignity for Disability MLC Kelly Vincent and Link columnist said: “The disability community, like any political sector, can be fragmented and difficult to navigate. That is what makes Link such an important publication. It gives an equal voice to an extensive range of people and issues, helping to foster unity, engagement and growth in the community.”

You can subscribe to Link Magazine here.

On April 26, a new traffic plan will be implemented for Victoria Square in the city to cater for the redevelopments the area is undergoing. Traffic restrictions and shared path arrangements that will be in place and pedestrian crossings connecting Wakefield Street and Grote Street to the northern half of the Square will be closed.

All pedestrian access to the northern half of the Square is expected to be closed over the next month; therefore there will be no crossing connections and no footpath access and this is likely to continue until the end of the year. Some restrictions will also be in place around the southern end of the Square when works require, timing of this has not yet been confirmed.

The traffic management team have particular interest to make sure that white cane and guide dogs users that use Victoria Square as a regular path of travel are notified to enable individuals to arrange any necessary guidance for new paths of travel.

Further details regarding the project are available on Adelaide City Council’s website: www.victoriasquareadelaide.com.au. Traffic management plans are also available on this website and further information about alternative options for commuters and pedestrians are available here: www.smartmoveadelaide.com.au.

SURVEY:

Do you have a spare 20 minutes that you could spend filling out a survey for research looking to reduce the number of deaths caused by epilepsy?

The study looks at how well health and community services respond to the needs of the bereaved at this difficult time. The survey also questions whether families and friends feel that particular factors contributed to the deaths, and what resources they have been able to access to help them cope with this event. This information will be used to make recommendations for sensitive service provision, through policy and training improvements. It will also help to improve community awareness of epilepsy-related risks.

USEFUL INFORMATION:

Beware of Scammers Asking for NDIS Fees

People are being warned to beware of contact from anyone claiming to work for the Government who asks them to pay an administration fee to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The Gillard Government is investing $1 billion to launch the scheme which is being rolled out by the NDIS Launch Transition Agency in July 2013.  The Agency will not be seeking fees from anyone to participate in the scheme and urges people to be wary of anyone asking for payments for Government schemes, including the NDIS.

If people are concerned that their privacy has been breached or they have provided personal details as a result of one of these calls, they should report it to the police.  People can also report a scam and get further information at the Government’s Scamwatch website or call the hotline on 1300 795 995 http://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/693900

Social media is widely used when disasters and emergencies arise and are a common form of communication and alerts. It is often over looked as to whether the content of the social media is really available and accessible to everyone in the community.

The Emergency 2.0 Wiki Accessibility Toolkit has been developed to empower people with disabilities to use social media for disaster preparedness, response and recovery. It was developed in response to the fact that not all people with a disability are able to access lifesaving messages delivered through social media due to the accessibility challenges that the tools currently pose. Please follow the link below to have a look at the Accessibility Toolkit (Wikipedia page)
